Let’s talk bathroom upgrades!
In this blog, I wanna share 10 unheard-of DIY tips for your rental bathroom makeover.
I’ve watched countless bathroom improvement videos and I can guarantee that my tips are NOT mentioned in any of them.
So, if you’re looking for new and fresh bathroom decor ideas, small bathroom design tips, or bathroom storage ideas for your apartment - you’ll find these and more in my list below.
The best part? They’re all budget-friendly too.
1.Use daylight bulbs
This works especially if your bathroom has no windows. And you’ll see the difference instantly.
2.Refresh your tiles
My bathroom tiles were just nasty, especially along the grout lines. I used an instant mold and mildew stain remover to clean it and to give my bathroom a refreshing look.
IMPORTANT: This stuff works BUT it’s pretty strong so make sure you use a mask!

Now, I live in South Florida where humidity is constantly high and that might contribute to why my bathroom molds keep building up.
But I dug deeper and got into the real source of the problem:
I found out that whoever did my bathroom left spaces in between the tiles and the tub and simply filled it with caulk. (tsk, tsk, tsk..)
So to solve it once and for all, I went to Home Depot and got a bucket of premixed adhesive and grout. I used this to regrout my bathroom tiles and re-whiten it. It’s also great for patching up cracked tiles.
Regrouting is a 2-step process by which:
01 - You remove the hardened old grout from seams or joints, between tiles with an oscillating tool and some manual scraping.
02 - You mix up some new grout and apply it to the tile with a grout float and clean it up with a sponge.
3. Cover your countertops with marble contact paper
In my previous blog, I gave detailed tips on how to apply stick-and-peel marble contact paper to your kitchen counter.
You can also watch the video on how I did that here:
You can simply follow the same method, but as an additional tip, I also added caulking around the edges of the contact paper to make sure no water will seep through.
4. Vertical space = Storage solutions
I know one of the biggest issues in having a small bathroom is STORAGE.
In my case, I have a narrow bookshelf which was in my living room but I figured it fits perfectly between my sink and water closet. Now, I have stylish storage for my bathroom without consuming much of the floor space.
5. Add mirrors
My rental bathroom has a mirror, but I managed to add a second one.
Even though we don't have double sinks, having a second mirror makes the room feel bigger.
PLUS - now I can still do my hair or brush my teeth if I have to share the bathroom with my six-feet-two husband!
Adding mirrors in any room makes the space feel bigger.
6. Frame your old bathroom mirror
When I first came to my apartment, I tried to frame my old mirror using the wood technique.
Uh-uh. Didn’t work.
So I instead used a 50-cent electrical tape. And who would have thought, this stuff worked great!
It did not cost much but made a really big impact. It gave my bathroom a modern look and stayed on for a really long time.
7. Cover your cabinets with contact paper
Yep. Just like my counters.
8. Cover or clean ugly floor areas
If you don’t like your rental bathroom floors, you can simply cover them with stick-and-peel vinyl tiles. I got mine from Home depot.
Here’s a step by step video tutorial on how I did it:
BUT if your budget is not enough to purchase new tiles, then you can always clean your floor tiles especially in between the tiles.
I used The Works™ cleaner for my kitchen floor and it made a huge difference. I only had to apply it once and the dirt never built up since.
9. Hang textured wall art
I had this old shirt that I was about to donate. But then, I looked at it and said, ‘this will make an amazing wall art’ 💡
So I took it apart and formed it into a DIY wall art.
Macrame is the art of creating decorative and functional textile pieces using knot tying techniques.
10. Upgrade your bathroom towels
I make it a habit to do this once a year. I go out and replace old towels with new ones.
Not only is it a good practice for body and skin care, but it also gives a refreshing look to your bathroom.
